- Introduction & First Impressions

It is a time of great darkness. Many have fallen. Creeping shadows cover the once green hills, and the sounds of joy and laughter are heard no more. The world awaits the fulfillment of a prophecy, long foretold, of a hero that will save the lands from this plague.
Yes, it's been a rough few months for Zodiac owners. But fortunately, there's EDGE.
First prophesied -- sorry, announced -- nearly two years ago, the Extreme Dungeon Game Experience has finally arrived. In that time, Tapwave has gone from boom to bust, games have come and gone, and R. Zane Rutledge, the mastermind behind ZaneGames and the EDGE title, has labored on his epic project: a real-time fantasy role-playing game for Palm OS.
Zane has kept a running commentary on his progress creating EDGE on his hosted web forum, taking user feedback and providing a glimpse into the design decisions and development tasks that have gone into the game. It's fascinating reading for anyone interested in game development, but most of all it shows that this game has truly been a labor of love, for Zane and for the many dedicated beta testers (some of them, no doubt, from the Tapland community -- they'd tell you, but then they'd have to kill you). With the game's release, the community aspect will continue, with both a forum and a live chat room for help and hints (users are advised not to give spoilers in public).
First Impressions
If you've played PC titles like Diablo you'll be familiar with the general idea: guide your character through a world of monsters, quests, puzzles and magic, gaining experience and facing tougher and tougher foes. Interact and trade with the peaceful folks in the towns; torch and slaughter the belligerent enemies that roam the lands outside. If that sounds good, you'll be happy to know that EDGE is in many respects the classic RPG. Its overarching story and world will be familiar to anyone who has read or watched the Lord of the Rings series or played Dungeons and Dragons, rife as it is with tales of enchantment, greed, treachery and redemption. What makes EDGE special is its attention to detail and the fact that it is the first of its kind on the Palm OS platform.
